Femme Fabrics: Sensual Aerial Silks for unlocking expression w/Alayna Stroud

As the title would suggest, this is a class designed particularly for our female-identifying students. A unique evening tailored to you and a sacred space to let your femininity flow. Delving into sensual movement on the ground, diving deep into improv, and following our own inner voices, we will sore to new heights in the air!

We spend a great deal of time as women trying to get things right, to fit into the molds presented to us, even to be sexy in a prescribed way. What if there was a space to be messy, to make mistakes in front of other women who weren't judging you, and to find out how moving in a sensual way feels for you without dictated boundaries?

We will be creating just such a place, and time.

Class begins with a grounding warm-up drawing from meditation, dance, and yoga principals. We will then take time to learn some basic techniques to hang and perch in the air on a variety of soft and fluid fabric apparatuses- silks, hammocks, etc. Then we will explore exercises that help you to find your own personal pathways and individualized movements. The class will culminate in students improvising to find their own flow to great music. Challenge yourself to try something new in a fun and safe environment!

$60 to enroll

About Maca:

I started with photography in 2015, in Chile.

From that moment, the camera became the means to freeze and share what stimulates me. That's why what I like most is to work with artists or get lost in cities and find corners or situations that catch my attention.

When a scene generates something, inspires or mobilizes me, I know it's a good time to be captured.
In the photo sessions, I connect with what is happening around me and I become part of it. I move through space, I lie on the floor, I look for the right angle, I smile and sometimes I even get excited. The best photos come out when something is happening on the other side when the feeling is mutual.

I am passionate about art in all its forms and those who believe in what they do. I feel fortunate to be part of it and be able to transmit what it generates, help perpetuate it.

I work outdoors and with natural light. I believe that there is no way to replicate the perfection of a ray of sunlight from the right angle. I like to look for locations that adapt to the objective of the session and represent the person being photographed. I like to be clear about the tone and the message sought to be able to communicate it through the images, that is why it is important for me to really communicate the people I am working with.

Dance Hammock w/ Jenn Bruyer

“Hammock has been a long time favorite of mine because I feel like I can simply DANCE! Without the entanglement of a fabric tail or the defined edge of a steel bar my body feels as though it can move as freely as if there were nothing there at all!”

In this workshop we will explore specific skills, pathways and transitions that I think are particularly dance like in nature. We will also examine the space between the fabric loop and floor, how these two can meet and interconnect to create spins, circles, transitions, mounts and supported floor choreography to enhance your hammock vocabulary or create an entirely new performative experience. No background in dance or hammock is required.

Pre-req’s:
Open/all levels, but some aerial experience is recommended

$75 for single registration

$135 when enrolling in two workshops

First Fridays Contortion Workshop w/ Natalie Rhae

In this workshop, we will spend the first hour working on leg flexibility (both active and passive), toe point, and partner leg stretches. The second hour focuses primarily on shoulder and upper back flexibility. By the end of the class, you will know how to locate your upper back so you can then use it in deeper backbends.

You will also be given the tools to build a personalized warm-up stretch/strength routine for the specific theme each day. You will gain more confidence about how to stretch on days where you feel great, bendy, and full of energy; as well as how to stretch to your fullest capacity on days where you may feel under the weather, sore, or unmotivated.

Bring layers (long sleeve shirt, tank top, pants, back warmer, socks - no shorts for this workshop)

All Levels Welcome

$55/student for this workshop

 About Natalie:

After 17 years, Natalie Rhae decided to shelve the collegiate artistic gymnastics track and embrace the circus arts. Gymnast turned pole-dancer, hand-to-hand balancing flyer, and contortionist, Natalie Rhae now performs with a plethora of circus tribes (Vau de Vire Society, Velocity Circus, Circosphere, Earth Circus, etc.) and is also a freelance artist primarily around the Bay Area and Los Angeles.

Natalie's flexibility incomparably complements her physical strengths. Her years of gymnastics training is clearly exhibited in her versatile and unique style. Natalie's powerful, quick and upbeat demeanor equals her ability to move slowly and viscerally.

In addition, to live performance, Natalie can also be seen in print ads, on-camera and in commercials.

The Foundation: A Technique Boot Camp for Beginner Silks w/ Veronica Blair
May

to Jun 12

The Foundation: A Technique Boot Camp for Beginner Silks w/ Veronica Blair

This workshop series will focus on three key elements that play a role in building a strong foundation on the aerial silks.

DAY 1 - 5/22/2019
STRADDLE UP!:
The Breakdown - This workshop will familiarize students with the major muscle groups needed to safely invert, exercises to condition them and drills to develop straddle up proficiency. Participants will learn how to identify common pitfalls and how to safely and effectively perform inversions.

DAY 2 - 5/29/2019
BOTTOMS UP!:
Cross-back Straddle - Continuing to unlock inversions, this weeks focus will be on cross back straddle. Flexibility issues will be addressed, and students will learn how to use tension while using footlocks to protect their ankles, and low back while performing crossback straddle. Students will learn up to 5 entry variations into a cross back straddle as well as corresponding tricks to add to their repertoire!

DAY 3 - 6/5/2019
HIP KEYS PLEASE!
: The Hip-Key/Hip-Lock is essential to building a solid foundation on aerial silks or rope, but this seemingly “easy” maneuver is more than meets the eye. Hip-Key theory and movement progressions will be covered. Up to 5 alternate entries into Hip-Key other than the traditional “Scissor Legs” technique as well as corresponding tricks will be introduced.

DAY 4 - 6/12/2019
SEQUENCING 101:
A Beginners Guide to Aerial Act Creation.  In this workshop, students will learn the theory behind basic aerial silks techniques to create seamless transitions. Through technique drills, games and music driven play, students will explore how to link tricks together and create their first aerial act.

Straps are fun! with Aaron Koz

Learn fundamental techniques for safe and effective training of aerial straps that will improve your power and control across all apparatuses. Straps are fun. Students warm up using a set of exercises designed to prehabilitate and strengthen the shoulders, then cover fundamental static positions on straps (meathook, inverted straddle, nutcracker, croc, support, flag, and side balance). Straps are fun.

The end of the workshop will focus on 2 and 1-arm spinning using the dynamic technique of flares to invert to different positions. I swear straps are fun.

This workshop will be beneficial for aerial artists who want to improve their spinning technique, meathooks/reverse-meathooks, roll-ups, and other skills on any apparatus. No straps experience required.

Prerequisites: 2 arm inversions of any kind (straddle-up, tuck-up, pike-up). 1-arm hangs with engaged shoulders for 10-20 seconds (or 2-arm for 30), and 20-30 second wall handstand or 45-second plank.

This workshop series will focus on three key elements that play a role in building a strong foundation on the aerial silks.

DAY 1 - 1/14/2019
STRADDLE UP!: The Breakdown - This workshop will familiarize students with the major muscle groups needed to safely invert, exercises to condition them and drills to develop straddle up proficiency. Participants will learn how to identify common pitfalls and how to safely and effectively perform inversions.

DAY 2 - 1/21/2019
BOTTOMS UP!: Cross-back Straddle - Continuing to unlock inversions, this weeks focus will be on crossback straddle. Flexibility issues will be addressed, and students will learn how to use tension while using footlocks to protect their ankles, and low back while performing crossback straddle. Students will learn up to 5 entry variations into cross back straddle as well corresponding tricks to add to their repertoire!

DAY 3 - 1/28/2019
HIP KEYS PLEASE! - The Hip-Key/Hip-Lock is essential to building a solid foundation on aerial silks or rope, but this seemingly “easy” maneuver is more than meets the eye.
Hip-Key theory and movement progressions will be covered. Up to 5 alternate entries into Hip-Key other than the traditional “Scissor Legs” technique as well as corresponding tricks will be introduced.

This series is for both beginner and advanced students (looking to brush up on technique).

Silks games and creation

New year new fun!

Join in for this workshop of silks games turning your brain to new ways of being in the air. Through collaborative games, we can find creative new pathways and wrap ourselves in exploration! For this workshop, we will play games that challenge students to think outside of using their aerial apparatus for only tricks.

Some of the workshop will be focused on sequencing and how to change and expand your own typical movement patterns. Other areas of the workshop will be focused on working in groups to create a scene or feeling for an audience. We will also play with character development and ways to convey those characters in the air. Students will walk away with new ideas for performance options, and games they can use to create future work.

We will play, as well as create, in this workshop with Sierra Camille.

Early Bird price of $40 with promo code Sierra17

$50 after 12/14

*All payments are non-refundable but may be converted into Aerial Artique account credit (minus a $15 processing fee) if cancellation is received more than 72 hours before the workshop.
